CAFF Priorities met: Expanding Community Philanthropy; Engaging Youth and Young People
Oasis Counseling International received a $1,500 grant from the Columbus Area Future Fund for their Befriend Mentoring Program. Befriend is a family-to-family mentoring program currently operating in Columbus and Norfolk. The program provides a mentoring service for at-risk families with volunteer mentor families. It is unique because it serves the entire family unit, specifically: children at risk because of current or possible abuse and neglect; teen parents and single parents; parents with a history of alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic violence, psychiatric conditions or physical illness; and parents needing improved child management practices.
The purpose of Befriend is to create a community of healing; to provide critical support, encouragement and accountability to vulnerable people; to connect them with community resources they are unaware of or unable to access on their own; to reduce child abuse and neglect; to decrease substance abuse and violence; to increase parenting skills; to develop and strengthen protective factors; and to promote the social-emotional well-being of the entire family. Befriend is a bridge that brings hurting and healthy people together.
The Befriend Mentoring Program is making a difference one family at a time. The Columbus Area Future Fund is proud to offer support of this much-needed resource in our community.
